Notes

Many establishments require non-slip floors.

Asphalt is a common non-slip floor that comes in two types, Mastic Asphalt and Pitch Mastic.

Pitch Mastic has an improved resistance to cracking. Pigments can be added to colour the floor. Well known suppliers of different types of hard floor surfaces are: Altro, Elgood, Forbo, Gerland, Isocrete, Eponite and Shaw’s of Darwen.

Surface Defined

Commercial hard-wearing carpets from contract flooring suppliers with wide area coverage.

A general carpet cleaning and maintenance programme is required with the use of a dry, wet & dry vacuum or professional carpet cleaning machines.

Main uses

  • Shops and reception areas, conference halls, sports centres, private leisure clubs, hospitals, airports, hotels and accommodation, nursing homes, offices and museums etc.

Used in hotels and accommodation pubs and clubs

Notes

True pile carpets are from pile formed by a loop in the warp e.g. Brussels and Tapestry, but are cut in Wilton carpets.

Tufted carpets are made by weaving short lengths of thread to a backing e.g. Axminster, Persian, Turkey and Indian carpets.

Ingrained carpets without pile are woven and known as Scotch and Kidderminster.

There is a range of Carpets known as the hard wearing naturals made from materials such as husks and seaweed.

Sisal is the most hard--wearing and a cheap underrated product is Coir, which is made from the Husks of the coconut. Seagrass and Jute are also good alternatives but not as hard wearing as Coir and Sisal.

The cleaning and maintenance of this machinery is highly specialised and should be carried out with the correct equipment.

  • Mostly used in airports, bus terminals, shopping malls, department stores and large hotels.

Notes

First escalator was installed and made by Schindler in 1936. They have three current models:

  • Schindler 9300 - The Versatile Escalator
  • Schindler 9700 – The High Rise Escalator
  • Schindler 9500 – The Horizontal & Inclined Escalator.

Otis is also another well-known manufacturer. The Otis 506 NCE Escalator can be assembled to individual specifications therefore making it a very flexible product.
