Astroturf

Surface Defined

Astro turf is the commonly used name for all types of synthetic grass or artificial grass / turf sports surfaces.

These sand filled or water filled all weather pitches enable year round use for sport. The synthetic surface can become compacted through use if not maintained properly with the correct machinery.

Where no maintenance programmes have been used renovation will be required.

Main uses

  • Most sports that are played on grass can be played on artificial grass, for example, 5-a-side and 11-a-side football, hockey, tennis, rugby and even bowls!
  • Also known as all weather pitches, synthetic sports surface and multi-purpose pitch.

Notes

There are a number of companies that manufacture these surfaces, namely: Desso™, Play Rite™, TigerTurf™, Charles Lawrence, Anglian & Midland Sports Surfaces, Blakedown Sport & Play Ltd, The ERDC Group.

Commonly used names for this surface is:

Astroturf™ Grasshopper™, Field Turf™, Bonar Grass™ & Yarns. Desso™ and Tiger Turf™ are a couple of trade names for the longer turf type.

Running Tracks

Surface Defined

There are four basic types of synthetic tracks:

  • Solid PU (polyurethane) - impervious to water.
  • Sandwich systems - solid PU surface over a porous base.
  • Porous PU - allows water to pass through.
  • Prefabricated systems, manufactured off site, normally impervious.

A cleaning and maintenance programme is advisable to remove surface dust build-up, leaves and litter.

Main uses

  • For a variety of athletic running events and run-ups for field events. The best installations meet with the IAAF approval.
  • Softer tracks are preferred by athletes for training as the surface is easier on the joints. Harder surfaces are better for speed and breaking records.

Well known manufacturers and constructors of these surfaces are:

  • Charles Lawrence, Blakedown Sports & Play,
  • The ERDC Group, McArdle Astroturf™.

Some of the commonly used names for running tracks are:

  • Tartan, the 365 series, Mondo, Spurtan BS & V, Polytan PUR,
  • Polyflex 942.

Some track surfaces require a maximum length for running spikes to be 6mm or less.

Sports Carpets

Surface Defined

Very similar to the surfaces discussed with Astroturf but these surfaces are usually a short pile carpet, woven or needle punch. Can also be termed Astroturf rugs.

The problems of pilling and ball fluff can easily be dealt with by using the correct cleaning and maintenance programme.

Main uses

  • Indoor bowls, commonly in large felt rolls for the use in Sports Centres where a multi-use sports hall is in operation.
  • When used for Tennis courts, this surface can also have an in-fill of fine grade sand. These surfaces also effect the bounce and playability of the ball and different players prefer different surfaces.

Notes

Different artificial carpets are required for indoor and outdoor use.

Outdoor are needle punch carpets ie: Playrite™ DOB carpet.

Indoor are predominantly woven carpets ie: Playrite ProWeave.

Sports Hall Floors

Surface Defined

Generally these are sprung or vinyl covered concrete.

Some vinyls are reinforced with fibreglass and laid with a special foam backing, others are a non-slip vinyl/stone combination.

A general cleaning hardwood floors and maintenance program is required to remove surface dust and scuff marks.

Main uses

  • Indoor hockey and football, tennis, basket ball, netball, badminton, cricket, aerobics, handball and volleyball.
  • Supreme-Court is a favourite with professional tennis players as it suits a powerful, fast game.

Notes

Ash, Maple and Beech are commonly used wood for floors. Junckers and Granwood are well known suppliers and installers.

Vinyl covered floors are technically improving all the time.

Sport M™ by Taraflex is a highly regarded PVC sports floor surface and claims to enhance safety and reduce joint stress.
